When does a configurator pay off?
A product configurator pays off as soon as products are put together, priced and quoted according to fixed rules. These are the four situations in which manufacturers and dealers come to wunderwerk.
“Every quote takes hours and needs our most experienced engineer.”
Inside sales, field sales and dealers put products together in expert mode. Rules prevent impossible combinations, the price is derived from tiers, surcharges and discounts, and the result is a finished PDF quote that goes straight into the CRM.
“Customers call us because they can’t work out online what they need.”
Customers build their product step by step on your website, see the price instantly and send a complete enquiry, or the configuration lands in the basket of your existing shop. Your sales team gets qualified enquiries instead of follow-up questions.
“Our pricing logic lives in an Excel file that only one person still understands.”
We transfer formulas, price lists and special rules from Excel or an old tool into a web application with a central database. Several people can work at the same time, every configuration is traceable, and you maintain new variants in one place.
“Our calculator should become an offering of its own, with login and subscription.”
A configurator or calculation becomes a product that customers and partners use and pay for themselves: with user accounts, trial period, billing and sales process, like the photovoltaic calculator we developed. More on portals and SaaS on our customer portal page.
What a good product configurator delivers
A product configurator only sells if it knows your real product logic: variant rules, price calculation, guided selling, PDF quotes, enquiry or order, and integration with ERP, CRM and PIM. wunderwerk develops these six building blocks for your product range. The result: fewer follow-up questions, fewer errors in variants and dimensions, faster quotes and more closed deals.
How we build your product configurator
wunderwerk builds a product configurator in five steps: initial consultation, product logic with a clickable prototype, a first version in 4–8 weeks, integration and go-live, then operation and expansion. No 80-page specification and no months without results: every step has a tangible outcome, and after every step you decide whether to continue.
- 1
Initial consultation
30 minutes with the managing director: products, variants, sales channel and existing systems. You get an honest assessment of whether a custom configurator pays off for you or a standard solution is enough. Free and non-binding.
- 2
Product logic & clickable prototype
Together with your product experts, we capture variants, rules, prices and data sources and build a clickable prototype with real product cases. Sales and selected customers test the flow before any code is written. The result: a roadmap with a cost range.
- 3
First version in 4–8 weeks
We start with the product line that currently causes the most quotes or follow-up questions. We test rules and prices against typical and tricky configurations from your real quotes until every result is right.
- 4
Integration & go-live
Integration with ERP, CRM, PIM or shop, PDF quotes in your layout, embedding in your website, hosting in the EU. Plus training for sales and everyone who maintains products and prices.
- 5
Operation & expansion
Maintenance, support and further development during operation. Then come further product lines, dealer access or languages, in the order that takes the most load off your sales team.
AI writes code. We build software.
Thanks to wunderOS and our wunderFactory.
AI has opened up programming to everyone: anyone can put a prototype together today. Whether it turns into software that holds up in day-to-day operation is decided afterwards – in architecture, security, testing and maintenance over the years. That is exactly where prompting and real expertise part ways.
That is why we built our own operating system: wunderOS runs our company from sales to development. At its heart is the wunderFactory, where our AI agents, the wunderBots, build to the architecture rules, standards and tests from 20 years of software development – led by experienced software architects.
The result is software built noticeably faster and more affordably – in the quality you hire us for. We are AI experts and use that to get the best out of your project.

More software for the same budget
The wunderBots handle the routine work. You pay for architecture, decisions and results – not for legwork.
Live in weeks, not months
From the workshop to the first usable version, with changes after that in days. You see early on what works.
Quality is built in, not bolted on
Tests, reviews and security checks run automatically in the wunderFactory with every change – not just when there is time.
Architects, not prompters
The AI executes, we decide: data model, interfaces, operations. That way your software stays maintainable and extensible five years from now.
Bottom line: Bespoke software on terms that make sense for SMEs too – built with AI, with software architects accountable for it.

Standard CPQ or custom-developed?
Standard CPQ software (configure, price, quote) fits when your product range fits the tool’s scheme. A custom-developed product configurator pays off when your product logic is your competitive edge or when customers and dealers configure themselves. In the initial consultation, wunderwerk tells you openly which route suits you.
| Standard CPQ | Custom | |
|---|---|---|
| Product logic | the tool’s scheme | your rules, prices, processes |
| Licence | per user, ongoing | no per-user licence |
| Users | mostly sales | sales, dealers, end customers |
| Start | fast if your range fits | first version in 4–8 weeks |
- Standard software fits if …
your product range fits the tool’s specifications, you already use an ERP with a configurator module and ongoing per-user licence costs are not an issue. In that case, we’ll recommend it.
- Custom pays off if …
your rules, prices and processes are distinctive, customers or dealers use the configurator themselves and it needs to fit seamlessly into your website, ERP and CRM.
- Open technologies, clearly documented
Open, widely used technologies such as TypeScript, React, Next.js and Laravel, clearly documented. No per-user licence, no dependency on a builder or a single developer.
- Grows with your product range
Maintainable, extensible, openly documented: new product lines, dealer access or languages can be added without starting over.

🇦🇹 Funding check
Which funding fits now?
Planning a digitalisation project in Austria? KMU.DIGITAL, Austria’s SME digitalisation programme, no longer accepts new applications: its budget is used up, and it will not continue from 2027. As a KMU.DIGITAL Certified Digital Consultant (CDC), I show you in a free funding check which programmes fit your project now.
What we clarify in a free 15-minute call with the founder of wunderwerk:
- Whether your company and your project are eligible
- Which funding programme is currently open
- What you need to consider before applying
- Which costs are eligible
Important: The safe order is: application first, costs afterwards. Only the funding body can decide.
Why us?
What else is on your mind?
Many projects touch more than one topic. Here are the other areas in which we support businesses.
Ready for a configurator that sells?
Whether it’s a quote configurator for sales or an online configurator for your customers: in a 30-minute initial consultation we clarify whether a custom configurator pays off for you, what the first step looks like and what it costs.
Frequently asked questions about product configurators
Your question isn’t listed? We’ll answer it in a free initial consultation, directly with the managing director.
What is a product configurator?
A product configurator is software that lets customers, dealers or sales staff put together a product with many variants step by step. It checks rules and dependencies, calculates the price and passes on the result as a quote, enquiry or order. wunderwerk develops custom product configurators for manufacturers and dealers whose products are too complex for a simple form or a standard shop.
How much does it cost to have a product configurator developed?
The cost of a product configurator depends mainly on rules, pricing logic and integrations, less on the number of products. A configurator for one product line with enquiries by email is considerably smaller than a quote configurator with ERP and CRM integration for several countries. After the initial consultation, wunderwerk gives you a transparent cost range, each phase is commissioned separately, and we start with the product line that pays off fastest. You can get an initial estimate via the cost calculator.
What is CPQ, and do we need standard CPQ software?
CPQ stands for configure, price, quote: configure the product, calculate the price, create the quote. Standard CPQ software is quicker to introduce if your product range fits its scheme; in return, you pay ongoing per-user licence fees and adapt your processes to the tool. A custom quote configurator maps your rules, prices and sales channels precisely and fits into your website, ERP and CRM. wunderwerk recommends custom development when your product logic is a competitive advantage or when customers and dealers use the configurator themselves, and tells you openly when standard software is the better fit.
Do we need a 3D configurator?
Not necessarily: what matters for sales are correct rules, a transparent price and a clean handover to the sales team; the visualisation can be product images, drawings or a 3D model. A 3D configurator is mainly worthwhile when the appearance changes significantly with every option and CAD or 3D data already exist. wunderwerk clarifies this in the concept phase based on your products and data, before any effort is spent.
Can the configurator be connected to ERP, CRM or our shop?
Yes. wunderwerk connects product configurators via interfaces (APIs) to ERP, CRM, PIM and existing shops: items, prices and customer data come from your systems, and finished configurations go back as a quote, order or basket. The configurator runs as a separate application and complements your systems. We don’t build or maintain the online shop itself.
How long does it take to develop a product configurator?
wunderwerk usually delivers a first working version for one product line within 4–8 weeks, depending on rules and integrations; you see a clickable prototype with real product cases before that. Integration, further product lines and expansion then follow in short steps with regular test versions.
Which technologies do you use, and is the configurator GDPR-compliant?
wunderwerk builds product configurators with open, widely used technologies such as TypeScript, React, Next.js and Laravel, clearly documented and without per-user licences. Hosting is in the EU (in Switzerland for Swiss companies, if preferred), and we plan GDPR data protection in from the start, because enquiries and quotes contain customer data. That keeps you independent of a builder or a single developer. See secure software development for how wunderwerk builds security in from the start.
Who looks after the configurator and maintains products and prices?
After go-live, wunderwerk looks after the product configurator with maintenance, support and further development, for example new product lines, dealer access or languages; we have worked with some clients for more than ten years. Your team maintains products, rules and prices: depending on your system landscape, they come from ERP or PIM or from an admin interface in the configurator. We define this in the concept so that new variants and price changes don’t require development work.
Configurator or customer portal: which do we need?
A configurator solves one task: putting together and quoting products correctly. A customer portal bundles several services for logged-in customers, such as orders, documents, status and reordering, and can include a configurator. wunderwerk develops both; many start with the configurator and later expand it into a portal. More on this under Customer portal development.
Is there funding for a product configurator?
Yes, digitalisation projects such as a product configurator are funded in Austria, Germany and Switzerland through various programmes, depending on country, region, company size and project. wunderwerk carries out an initial funding check with you and shows which options are available for your project. The easiest way is in a free initial consultation.
Who is wunderwerk, and do you also work in Germany and Switzerland?
wunderwerk is a small development team from Tyrol (headquartered in the Kitzbühel district), Salzburg, Vienna and Berlin with more than 20 years of project experience and 80+ projects; we work for companies in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, remotely and with kick-offs and workshops on site at your premises. Our work includes the curtain configurator for thecurtain.shop (a client for more than ten years) and our PV configurator solarmaker with over 15,000 plans. For a Swiss industrial automation company, we have been developing and maintaining software for over ten years that now runs in several plants across Europe; Swiss companies can choose hosting in Switzerland or the EU, at Tyrolean hourly rates in euros. You speak directly with the managing director; more on Switzerland on the page Software for Switzerland.
