Software modernisation without downtime
Your developer has gone, the software still runs, but nobody dares touch it any more? We take over existing software, legacy systems and Access or Excel solutions, analyse them honestly and renew them step by step while your business keeps running – with a clear cost range before every step.
- 80+ projects
- 5.0 on Google
- Clients for 10+ years
- Initial consultation directly with the managing director – free & non-binding
Where does your software stand right now?
Software that has grown over time is rarely bad; it has simply got on in years. Four situations in which companies come to us, and what we do in each of them.
What modernisation actually delivers
Software modernisation is not an end in itself. It pays off when it reduces risk, cost and dependency and makes your system fit for the next ten years again.
How we modernise your software
No big bang and no months without results. Every step has a clear outcome and a cost range, and you decide after each step whether to continue.
- 1
Initial consultation
30 minutes with the managing director: what does the system do, who built it, where does it hurt, what access is there? You get an honest first assessment. Free and non-binding.
- 2
Analysis of the existing system
A paid technical and commercial analysis, usually within one to two weeks: code and architecture, technology and versions, tests, documentation, deployment, security, operations, rights to the source code and dependencies, and the business value of the existing functions and data.
- 3
Decision & roadmap
The result is a recommendation backed by figures, not a gut feeling. Continue, modernise step by step or redevelop. Plus a roadmap with sequence, cost range and the first step that removes the most risk.
- 4
Stabilise & renew module by module
Secure first (updates, backups, monitoring, automated tests, reproducible deployment), then renew piece by piece. The old and new software run in parallel, your data is preserved and your team keeps working.
- 5
Operation & further development
Maintenance, monitoring and support during operation, plus new features when your business needs them. We have been looking after many of our clients for over ten years.
AI writes code. We build software.
Thanks to wunderOS and our wunderFactory.
AI has opened up programming to everyone: anyone can put a prototype together today. Whether it turns into software that holds up in day-to-day operation is decided afterwards – in architecture, security, testing and maintenance over the years. That is exactly where prompting and real expertise part ways.
That is why we built our own operating system: wunderOS runs our company from sales to development. At its heart is the wunderFactory, where our AI agents, the wunderBots, build to the architecture rules, standards and tests from 20 years of software development – led by experienced software architects.
The result is software built noticeably faster and more affordably – in the quality you hire us for. We are AI experts and use that to get the best out of your project.
What you get out of it:
- More software for the same budget
The wunderBots handle the routine work. You pay for architecture, decisions and results – not for legwork.
- Live in weeks, not months
From the workshop to the first usable version, with changes after that in days. You see early on what works.
- Quality is built in, not bolted on
Tests, reviews and security checks run automatically in the wunderFactory with every change – not just when there is time.
- Architects, not prompters
The AI executes, we decide: data model, interfaces, operations. That way your software stays maintainable and extensible five years from now.
Bottom line: Bespoke software on terms that make sense for SMEs too – built with AI, with software architects accountable for it.

AI-generated.

Continue, modernise or rebuild?
The most expensive decision is a gut decision. That is why we never judge an existing system before we have seen it, and even then we do not automatically recommend a rebuild.
A working system has value: established workflows, cleaned-up data, users who know it. We carry that forward wherever possible.
- Continue
When architecture and technology are sound and what is mainly missing is support, tests and documentation. We take over, secure and develop further.
- Modernise step by step
When the core is good but parts are outdated: user interface, database, interfaces or individual modules are renewed one after another while the system keeps running.
- Redevelop
When every change costs more than it brings, the technology can no longer be operated or the source code is missing. Then we rebuild, take over data and workflows and retire the legacy system in an orderly way.
- Honest, even if the answer is “not us”
We work with PHP/Laravel, TypeScript, React, Next.js and React Native. We are still happy to review systems built on other technologies and will tell you openly if another partner is a better fit.
Not just clients. Partners.
We focus on long-term partnerships. You stay flexible thanks to open standards and clear documentation.

Frequently asked questions about software modernisation
Question not listed? We will answer it directly with the managing director in the free initial consultation.
What is software modernisation?
Software modernisation (also called legacy modernisation) means bringing existing software up to current technology, security standards and today's requirements step by step, instead of throwing it away completely. This ranges from updating language and framework versions to a new user interface or database through to replacing individual modules. wunderwerk only decides which level your system needs after an analysis, and then renews it module by module while it stays in operation.
When should legacy software be modernised?
At the latest when one of these signals appears. There are no more security updates for the language, framework or server, every change takes weeks or nobody dares to make it any more, the original developer can no longer be reached, new requirements such as interfaces, mobile use or AI cannot be implemented, or the software only runs on a single old computer. In the free initial consultation, wunderwerk assesses how urgent it is in your case.
How much does software modernisation cost?
That depends on the size, condition and technology of the system, which is why wunderwerk does not quote a flat price but works in stages, each with its own cost range. It starts with a paid analysis at a manageable fixed price. This delivers the recommendation and the cost range for the modernisation itself, which then takes place in modules that you approve individually. You can get an initial estimate via the form or in the initial consultation.
Modernise or redevelop, which is more economical?
The analysis decides, not the service provider's preference. Modernising pays off when the business core is sound and mainly the technology, tests and operations need renewing. Redeveloping pays off when every change costs more than it brings, the technology can no longer be operated or the source code is missing. wunderwerk compares both routes in terms of cost, risk and duration and recommends the one that pays off for you, not automatically a rebuild.
Can you take over software whose developer can no longer be reached?
Yes, this is one of the most common cases at wunderwerk. The prerequisites are access to the source code, server and database, as well as the rights to the code. During the analysis we familiarise ourselves with the system, document it and secure operations first (backups, updates, monitoring). Then we take over maintenance and further development. If the source code is held by a previous provider, we help you obtain it.
Will our business keep running during the modernisation?
Yes. wunderwerk modernises without a big bang. The existing system keeps running while individual modules, the user interface or the database are renewed and switched over one after another. Your data is preserved and migrated with checks, and your team keeps working throughout. A cut-over date with downtime is the exception, not the rule.
Can you replace Access, Excel or FileMaker solutions?
Yes. wunderwerk replaces Office solutions that have grown over time with a web application that takes over the existing logic and data and adds what Access and Excel cannot do. Several users working at the same time, permissions, logging, interfaces to ERP, shop and CRM, and use on smartphones. The old file stays in use until the switchover.
How long does software modernisation take?
At wunderwerk, the analysis usually takes one to two weeks and stabilisation (updates, tests, deployment) a few weeks. The actual renewal runs in modules of a few weeks each, so you see results continuously. A medium-sized system is typically modernised within a few months, without ever coming to a standstill.
Which technologies do you use for modernisation?
wunderwerk develops with open, widely used technologies, PHP/Laravel, TypeScript, React, Next.js and React Native for mobile, and takes over systems that can be run on this stack in the long term. We are happy to review systems built on other technologies and will tell you openly whether we are the right partner. We do not take on .NET projects for ongoing maintenance.
Who owns the source code after the modernisation?
You do. You receive the complete source code, the documentation and access to all systems. wunderwerk works with open standards so that you are always free to choose who you work with next, and dependence on a single developer does not happen again.
Is there funding for software modernisation?
Yes, modernisation and digitalisation projects are funded in Austria, Germany and Switzerland through various programmes, depending on country, region, company size and project. In Austria, for example, KMU.DIGITAL, a funding programme for SMEs, is one possible route. wunderwerk carries out an initial funding check with you, most easily in the free initial consultation.
Why wunderwerk for software modernisation?
Because we have been building and running software for businesses for over 20 years and have supported many clients for more than ten years, including several generations of their systems. wunderwerk is a small, well-coordinated team of software architects and full-stack developers in Tyrol, Vienna and Berlin. You talk directly to the managing director, get a cost range before every step and receive software built to last instead of yet another system that will need modernising again in five years.
