Where is your production stuck?
Hardly any manufacturer is looking for “Industry 4.0”. They are looking for a fix for a specific nuisance on the line, in the lab or in the control room. Four typical situations that bring manufacturers to wunderwerk, and what comes out of them.
“Our production planning, shift log and inspection reports run on Excel and clipboards.”
We turn that into a shop floor app that runs on a tablet on the line and on a PC in the office: with permissions, history and mandatory fields. The data ends up where it is needed, not in yet another spreadsheet.
“Our plants deliver data, but nobody sees it in time.”
We capture machine and production data via your plants’ interfaces, such as OPC UA or MQTT, and make it visible as dashboards, alerts or reports. You see downtime, scrap and deviations while you can still react.
“The ERP plans, but it can’t handle the crucial step in production.”
Your ERP or MES stays. We build the missing piece, such as recipe management, batch documentation or a special process, and connect it via an interface. If it is about processes between ERP, CRM and shop in the office, read on at process automation.
“We build the plant, but our customers lack the right software to go with it.”
For machine and plant builders, we develop operating, recipe and service applications that you ship with your plant and keep developing. A recipe editor we built this way now runs in plants in Sweden, Italy and the Czech Republic.
Is your existing production software showing its age, or is its developer no longer available? Then we start with an analysis of the system; find out more under software modernisation.
What industrial software actually does in production
Industrial software from wunderwerk records, controls and documents what happens on the line, at the plant and in the lab, turning Industry 4.0 for mid-sized manufacturers into a series of small steps rather than one major project. Six applications that businesses in chemicals, manufacturing and plant engineering typically start with, individually or as building blocks of one shared system.

App for industrial control
wunderwerk developed industrial software that controls a highly sensitive chemical process. Recipes are created, reviewed and handed over to the production plant, from formulation to automated execution in one system.
- ✓In use in 5+ countries
- ✓Client for 6+ years
- ✓Version 2 in use
“We had the wunderworkers develop bespoke industrial software for creating recipes for a highly sensitive industrial process. […] The recipe editor now runs in several plants in Sweden, Italy and the Czech Republic.”

Extend, don’t replace: your plants and systems stay
wunderwerk connects industrial software to the machines, plants, ERP, MES and lab systems already running in your plant, instead of adding yet another island next to them. After all, industrial software is only as good as its integration.
The control level (PLC) stays with you or your automation partner. We deliver the software on top: data, interfaces, logic and integrations.
- Machines and plants
Integration via the interfaces your plants provide, such as OPC UA, MQTT, a database or file export. Read-only first, writing only once the process is proven.
- ERP, MES and lab software
Orders, master data, feedback and measurements flow via interfaces to SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, odoo, your MES or your lab software. Your systems stay, the retyping goes.
- On your plant network or in the EU cloud
Running on your own infrastructure, in a private cloud or hosted in the EU. With permissions, audit logs and backups, so production data stays in-house when it should.
- Open technologies, clearly documented
Widely used technologies and clean documentation. Your industrial software depends neither on a single person nor on a vendor ecosystem.
How we build your industrial software
wunderwerk builds industrial software in five steps, from a free initial consultation through a prototype in 4 to 8 weeks to operation and expansion, and you commission each phase separately. No major project that ties up production for months: we start with the process that costs the most.
- 1
Initial consultation
30 minutes with the managing director: which process is stuck, which plants and systems are involved, who works with them. You get an honest assessment of whether custom software is worth it or an off-the-shelf product fits better. Free and non-binding.
- 2
Process analysis
We look at the process where it happens: on the line, in the lab, in the control room. With production, IT and quality, we clarify steps, data sources, interfaces and exceptions. The result: a prioritised plan with a cost range and a clear first goal.
- 3
Prototype in 4 to 8 weeks
A working prototype with real data that your people get their hands on. So you see early on whether the solution holds up in day-to-day work and where the greatest benefit lies, before you invest in the full build-out.
- 4
Pilot & rollout
A pilot on one line or plant, integration with machines and ERP, training for the shifts. The existing process keeps running in parallel until the results are right. No downtime because of the switch.
- 5
Operation & expansion
Monitoring, maintenance, updates and further development during operation. Then more lines, plants or modules, so that one solution becomes lasting software that grows with your production for years.
AI writes code. We build software.
Thanks to wunderOS and our wunderFactory.
AI has opened up programming to everyone: anyone can put a prototype together today. Whether it turns into software that holds up in day-to-day operation is decided afterwards – in architecture, security, testing and maintenance over the years. That is exactly where prompting and real expertise part ways.
That is why we built our own operating system: wunderOS runs our company from sales to development. At its heart is the wunderFactory, where our AI agents, the wunderBots, build to the architecture rules, standards and tests from 20 years of software development – led by experienced software architects.
The result is software built noticeably faster and more affordably – in the quality you hire us for. We are AI experts and use that to get the best out of your project.

More software for the same budget
The wunderBots handle the routine work. You pay for architecture, decisions and results – not for legwork.
Live in weeks, not months
From the workshop to the first usable version, with changes after that in days. You see early on what works.
Quality is built in, not bolted on
Tests, reviews and security checks run automatically in the wunderFactory with every change – not just when there is time.
Architects, not prompters
The AI executes, we decide: data model, interfaces, operations. That way your software stays maintainable and extensible five years from now.
Bottom line: Bespoke software on terms that make sense for SMEs too – built with AI, with software architects accountable for it.

🇦🇹 Funding check
Which funding fits now?
Planning a digitalisation project in Austria? KMU.DIGITAL, Austria’s SME digitalisation programme, no longer accepts new applications: its budget is used up, and it will not continue from 2027. As a KMU.DIGITAL Certified Digital Consultant (CDC), I show you in a free funding check which programmes fit your project now.
What we clarify in a free 15-minute call with the founder of wunderwerk:
- Whether your company and your project are eligible
- Which funding programme is currently open
- What you need to consider before applying
- Which costs are eligible
Important: The safe order is: application first, costs afterwards. Only the funding body can decide.
Why us?
What else is on your mind?
Many projects touch more than one topic. Here are the other areas in which we support businesses.
Which process in your production costs you time every day?
Bring it to the initial consultation, ideally with the Excel file or a photo of the clipboard. In 30 minutes we clarify whether custom software is worth it, what integration it needs and what a first step looks like.
Frequently asked questions about industrial software
Your question isn’t here? We’ll answer it directly with the managing director in the free initial consultation.
What is custom industrial software?
Custom industrial software is software developed for the processes, plants and quality requirements of a specific manufacturer, instead of adapting the business to an off-the-shelf product. Typical examples are recipe management, shop floor apps, machine data dashboards, batch documentation or maintenance platforms. wunderwerk develops such solutions for chemicals, manufacturing, production and plant engineering and connects them with the systems already in place.
What is an MES, and does a mid-sized company need one?
An MES (manufacturing execution system) is the link between ERP and the shop floor: it controls, records and documents what actually happens at machines and workstations. Many mid-sized companies don’t need a full off-the-shelf MES, just some of its functions, such as production data acquisition, shift logs, production feedback or batch documentation. wunderwerk builds exactly these functions, lean and tailored to your business, or extends an existing MES where it has gaps.
Off-the-shelf MES or custom production software: which fits better?
An off-the-shelf MES is usually the better choice if it largely covers your processes, and wunderwerk will tell you so. Custom production software pays off when the crucial part of your process, such as recipes, special processes or the software for your own plant, cannot be handled by the standard product or forces you into costly workarounds. Often the answer is a combination: standard where it works, custom where it falls short.
| Criterion | Off-the-shelf MES | Custom software |
|---|---|---|
| Fits when | processes follow the industry standard | the crucial step is missing from the standard |
| Getting started | rolling out the product | one process, prototype in 4–8 weeks |
| Customisation | within the product’s limits | along your process |
| Cost logic | licence and rollout | development per phase, then operation and maintenance |
Can you connect our machines, plants and ERP?
Yes. wunderwerk connects machines and plants via the interfaces they provide, such as OPC UA, MQTT, a database or file exports, and links the industrial software to ERP systems such as SAP, Microsoft Dynamics or odoo and to existing MES and lab software. Orders and master data come from the ERP, feedback and measurements go back. wunderwerk develops the software above the control level; the PLC programming stays with you or your automation partner, with whom we coordinate the interface. Processes between ERP, CRM and shop in the office are covered on the process automation page.
How much does custom industrial software cost, and is there funding?
The cost of custom industrial software depends on the scope, the number of plants and systems, the quality of the existing interfaces and the requirements for documentation and operation, so wunderwerk does not quote a flat rate but gives you a transparent cost range after the process analysis. You commission each phase separately, from prototype to expansion. Digitalisation projects in production are funded in Austria, Germany and Switzerland through various programmes, depending on country, region, company size and project; wunderwerk carries out an initial funding check with you in the free initial consultation. You can get a first cost estimate via the cost calculator.
How long does development take, and how do we start with Industry 4.0 without a major project?
At wunderwerk, a working prototype is often feasible in 4 to 8 weeks, depending on scope and integration. You start with a single process that measurably costs time or quality today, for example the shift log, recipes or the machine data of one line. Then come a pilot on one line, rollout and expansion to further lines or modules in short steps, and every step has to pay off before the next one follows.
How secure are the systems, and where does the data reside?
wunderwerk develops industrial software with a focus on access security, data protection and system stability, and runs it on your plant network, in a private cloud or hosted in the EU in line with the GDPR, as you prefer. Permissions, audit logs and backups are built in from the start. Write access to plants only comes once the process has proven itself in read-only operation.
Who looks after the software after go-live?
wunderwerk continues to look after industrial software after go-live if you wish: monitoring, maintenance, updates and further development during operation, then more lines, plants or modules. wunderwerk has worked with some clients for over ten years; the client behind the app for industrial control has been with us for more than six years and now runs version 2. Open technologies and clean documentation ensure the software does not depend on a single person.
What does AI actually bring to production?
AI helps in production wherever enough data is generated: analysing process and quality data, spotting patterns and deviations early, predicting maintenance needs or reading documents such as inspection reports and delivery notes. wunderwerk integrates AI and machine learning into industrial software once the data foundation is in place, because without clean machine and production data, any AI remains an experiment. Find out more on the AI for businesses page.
Do you also develop software that machine builders ship to their customers?
Yes. wunderwerk develops operating, recipe and service applications for machine and plant builders that are shipped with the plant and developed further over the years. One example is a recipe editor for a highly sensitive industrial process that runs in plants in Sweden, Italy and the Czech Republic.
Where is wunderwerk based, and do you come to our plant?
wunderwerk is a small developer team of software architects, full-stack developers and AI engineers with offices in Tyrol, Salzburg, Vienna and Berlin, working for manufacturers across Austria, Germany and Switzerland, both remotely and on site. For the process analysis, we look at the process where it happens: on the line, in the lab or in the control room. The team brings over 20 years of project experience from 80+ projects and process know-how from recipe development to batch documentation, and you talk directly to the managing director.
